Holy Name Society

A Look At The SAINT JOSEPH HOLY NAME SOCIETY

The Holy Name Society had its orgin in the Council of Lyons in 1274.  Pope Gregory X selected the Dominicans to preach the devotion to the Holy Name of God and Jesus Christ as reparation for the heresies of the Albeigenses, and other blasphemies of that day.  Throughout its history Holy Name Society, and indulgenced congraternity in the Catholic Church, has had as its primary ojbective to beget due love and reverence for the Holy Name of God and Jesus Christ.  Its secondary objective has been to suppress heresy, blasphemy, and perjury, forbidden oaths, profanity, and unlawful swearing.

Today the Holy Name Society is still headed by Dominicans and is present in many Catholic Parishes around the world.  Its mission involves encouraging amoung its members and faithful:  REVERENCE for the Holy Name of God and Jesus;  REVERENCE for the holy apostolic Church, the bride of Jesus Christ; promoting PRAYER; assistance at the HOLY SACRIFICE F THE MASS AT HOLY HOURS and at other times of ADORATION; promoting RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AND FORMATION; reaching out to the community by encouraging and promoting CORPORAL WORKS OF MERCY and WORKING FOR THE GOOD of the Church in its needs and apostolate.

Becoming a member of the Saint Joseph Holy Name Society is more than belonging to an organization of Catholic men, instead, it involves the enrichment of Catholic men whose desire is to lead their families and community by spreading a devotion to the Holy Name of God and Jesus and serving the needs of the Church.  Our Society has been a valuable gift to our Parish family over there many years.  He shares in a legacy of labor for the glory of God and His Church.  This legacy accompanies the member of the Saint Joseph Holy Name Society who has passed away, with the Monthly Holy Sacrifice of the Mass offered for the repose of his soul together with all the departed members.  At his passing away, the Society shall be present to give comfort and assistance to the surviving members of his family, and to pray a Rosary and offer our Appreciation at the Wake, and offer the Funeral Mass for God's Mercy to be upon him.

More than ever we need the Holy Name Society.  We need their appostolate to shine forth in our world and help restore an awareness of the sacred, promote reverence, modesty and dignity of all life.  Yes we need laborers to take care of the physical needs of our Parish.  We are grateful for their servfice and sacrifices, but let us not forget what Gregory X asked of the Society's members:  PROMOTE THE HOLY NAME OF GOD AND JESUS CHRIST.

HOLY NAME PLEDGE

Blessed  be God.  Blessed be His Holy Name.

Blessed be Jesus Christ true God and true Man.

Blessed be the Name of Jesus.

I believe O Jesus - that Thou are the Christ - the Son of the Living God.

I proclaim my love - for the Vicar of Christ on Earth.

I believe all the sacred truths - which the Holy Catholic Church - believes and teaches.

I promise to give good example - by the regular practice - of my faith.

In honor of His Divine Name - I pledge myself against perjury - blasphemy - profanity - and obscene speech.

I pledge my loyalty to the flag of my country - and to the God - given principles - of freedom, justice and happiness - for which it stands.

I pledge my support - to all lawful authority - both civil and religious.

I dedicate myself - to the honor of the Sacred Name of Jesus Christ - and beg that he will keep me faithful - to these pledges

Until Death.

Amen.
